Introduction
Founded in 1886, Camberwell Grammar School is a respected independent school known for delivering exceptional education and enriching experiences to students and their families. As part of its strategic vision to redevelop facilities and expand programs, the School identified a critical need to build and strengthen its philanthropic capacity to support long-term growth and impact.
The Challenge
Camberwell faced a significant challenge: to recruit a senior fundraising professional capable of leveraging the existing foundation of philanthropy and connections to achieve growth, and implement a strategic and integrated program. The role demanded a leader who could design and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, drive capital and scholarship campaigns, and cultivate meaningful relationships with donors and the broader community. Equally important was driving a culture of philanthropy across the School; actively engaging staff, leadership, and stakeholders in a shared understanding of fundraising’s vital role in achieving the School’s mission. Although Camberwell Grammar School was not new to philanthropy, this appointment was a serious investment and step to drive positive change.
The Approach
In collaboration with the Head of Community and Development, the Principal, and the Head of People & Culture, Gembridge led the development of the brief, scope, and position description. A key early priority for the incumbent was securing of scholarship funding to ensure continued access to exceptional education for students, regardless of financial background. Drawing on deep market insights and sector expertise, Gembridge shaped a compelling opportunity aimed at attracting candidates capable of building a high-impact, comprehensive philanthropy program aligned with the School’s long-term master plan to transform facilities and programs for future generations.
Dawn Patrick and Michelle Varcoe led a proactive and creative search strategy to identify individuals with the expertise, proven track record, and affinity with the School’s values and community. Thinking outside the box, they actively explored talent beyond traditional pathways to ensure a diverse and high-quality pool of candidates who could bring fresh perspectives and genuine alignment with Camberwell’s mission.
The Results
By designing a rigorous search and selection framework, Gembridge narrowed the candidate pool to six highly qualified individuals. The final two were asked to present detailed plans to the interview panel, which assessed their ability to articulate actionable plans in the role, and demonstrate their alignment with the School’s culture and strategic direction.
Ed Smith was appointed as the successful candidate. As an alumnus of Camberwell Grammar School, Ed brought a deep personal connection to the role, alongside his professional expertise. Since joining, he has worked closely with the team and made significant progress in advancing the School’s philanthropic efforts. His leadership has already contributed to meaningful outcomes, including enhanced engagement with donors, staff and progress toward aspirational targets.
